Extraction and characterization of pectin from apple pomace and its evaluation as lipase (steapsin) inhibitor2010 •
2023 •
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a global threat, and now, in 2022, monkeypox (MPOX) has emerged as a new public health concern, declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization (WHO). Characterized by fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, MPOX has caused significant outbreaks worldwide, including in the Philippines. The first verified case in the Philippines was reported on July 29, 2022, with all four local cases recovering. However, misconceptions about MPOX, such as its transmission being solely through sexual contact and affecting only the LGBT community, have led to stigma and discrimination, potentially discouraging affected individuals from seeking necessary health services. Given the urgent need for accurate public knowledge and preventive measures, this study aims to assess the level of awareness about MPOX among second-year medical technology students at Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod. Understanding the awareness levels of future healthcare professionals is crucial as they will play a vital role in public health education and response. This study evaluates awareness based on several factors: sources of information, transmission mechanisms, symptoms, preventive measures, and treatment options. Additionally, it examines differences in awareness based on sex and identifies the primary sources of information regarding MPOX among the students. Findings from this study will offer valuable insights for public health strategies in the Philippines, highlighting the necessity for targeted educational initiatives to combat misinformation and improve public health outcomes. This research aims to contribute to the effective dissemination of information and the implementation of preventive measures to mitigate the impact of MPOX.

Reconsidering the Use of Cut-Off Scores: DCDQ - Brazil2019 •
Introduction: The DCDQ is a parental report designed to assess daily living activities of children, and serves as a useful questionnaire to aid in the diagnostic criteria of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). It is divided into three components: control during movement, fine motor/handwriting, and general coordination. The results categorize children in two groups: “Indication of DCD/suspect DCD”, and “probably not DCD”. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine appropriate cut-off scores for the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire - Brazil (DCDQ-BR) for use with Brazilian children employing a large sample. Methods: Seven hundred and seven children ages 6-10 were assessed with the DCDQ-BR and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT-2). Descriptive statistics was used to characterize the sample, and concurrent validity was assessed using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. Predictive validity was determined through values of sensi...

TNF-α Increases Production of Reactive Oxygen Species through Cdk5 Activation in Nociceptive Neurons2018 •
The participation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by NOX1 and NOX2/NADPH oxidase has been documented during inflammatory pain. However, the molecular mechanism involved in their activation is not fully understood. We reported earlier a key role of Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) during inflammatory pain. In particular, we demonstrated that TNF-α increased p35 expression, a Cdk5 activator, causing Cdk5-mediated TRPV1 phosphorylation followed by an increment in Cainflux in nociceptive neurons and increased pain sensation. Here we evaluated if Cdk5 activation mediated by p35 transfection in HEK293 cells or by TNF-α treatment in primary culture of nociceptive neurons could increase ROS production. By immunofluorescence we detected the expression of catalytic subunit (Nox1 and Nox2) and their cytosolic regulators (NOXO1 and p47) of NOX1 and NOX2/NADPH oxidase complexes, and their co-localization with Cdk5/p35 in HEK293 cells and in nociceptive neurons. By using a hydrogen per...

Validating whether a quantum device confers a computational advantage often requires classical simulation of its outcomes. The worst-case sampling cost of $L_1$-norm based simulation has plateaued at $\le(2+\sqrt{2})ξ_t δ^{-1}$ in the limit that $t \rightarrow \infty$, where $δ$ is the additive error and $ξ_t$ is the stabilizer extent of a $t$-qubit magic state. We reduce this prefactor 68-fold by a leading-order reduction in $t$ through correlated sampling. The result exceeds even the average-case of the prior state-of-the-art and current simulators accurate to multiplicative error. Numerical demonstrations support our proofs.

Modulation of solubility and development of a formulation of Plumbagin using hydrotropic solubilization techniqueThe present work aimed to increase the solubility of poorly water-soluble drug plumbagin using the hydrotropic solubilization technique. Plumbagin is a potent natural product extracted from the plant Plumbago zeylanica L. belonging to the family Plumbaginacea. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, dysmenorrhea, injury, and cancer. An oral liquid syrup was prepared using caffeine as a hydrotropic agent. The results showed 97 folds increase in the solubility of the plumbagin when caffeine was used as a hydrotropic agent. Moreover, various evaluation tests like pH, refractive index determination, and drug content of the developed syrup were performed. All the results showed satisfactory outcomes and proved that it is possible to create a stable dosage form using the hydrotropic solubilization technique.
