Seedless watermelon, a cultural alternative in Idanha’s campina The seedless watermelon could be a popular fruit within Portuguese consumers if the quality of the crop is high and if it is profitable for growers. The agricultural area of Idanha-a-Nova has excellent characteristics for the production of irrigated crops, in particular common watermelon, being already renowned for the excellent quality of these fruits. This article presents the study of a ceramic vessel of the “Bronze do Sudoeste” culture (Southwest Bronze Age Culture) recovered during archaeological excavations in a settlement in Lisbon’s historical center. This vessel is related with several other occurrences from burials and/or ritual depositions in Southern Estremadura region during the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. The most ancient of these productions coexist with the last beaker vessels both in this region as in Southwest Portugal, according to the available radiocarbon data.

Resumo Este documento regista 83 ocorrências arqueológicas inventariadas na freguesia de Monsanto, no concelho de Idanha-a-Nova. Destas sobressaem pela sua quantidade, densidade, variedade, acessibilidade e estado de conservação os lagares de vinho rupestres (lagariças), sinónimo da importância agrícola da área ao longo dos últimos dois mil anos e, provavelmente, correlacionável com a comunidade de Idanha-a-Velha, para abastecimento de vinho. Abstract This document records 83 archaeological sites recorded in Monsanto, a small village of Idanha-aNova. From all these, became more visible because of their amount, density, diversity, accessibility and state of preservation the small-wine presses, that show us the agricultural value of this area along the last two thousand years and, probably, correlated with the community of Idanha-a-Velha, for the wine supply.
