Sex and Genes, Part 1: Sexuality and Down, Prader–Willi, and Williams Syndromes2012 •
Specific genetic syndromes affect individuals' sexual development, experiences, and fertility. Individuals with specific syndromes can also display inappropriate sexual behavior resulting from vulnerabilities presented by their genetic makeup. Using clinical case studies, we discuss the specific impact that Down, Prader–Willi, and Williams syndromes can have on sexual development and behavior. Applying a biopsychosocial approach, we present the primary sexual effects, such as delayed sexual development and infertility. These genetic syndromes are also associated with challenges that are not specifically sexual in nature but that affect sexual expression, such as self-injury, mental health issues, or epilepsy. Medication side effects are also discussed. We conclude with treatment recommendations for individuals with sexual challenges, considering the unique effects of these three syndromes on sexuality.

Personality characteristics and trait clusters in final stage astronaut selection2004 •
This paper presents personality testing data from final stage applicants to the NASA astronaut program. Questions addressed include whether personality predicted final selection into the astronaut corps, whether women and men demonstrated typical gender differences in personality, and whether three characteristic clusters found in other high performance populations replicated in this group. Between 1989 and 1995, 259 final stage astronauts completed the Personal Characteristic Inventory (PCI) which assesses personality characteristics related to the broad traits of Instrumentality and Expressivity. In addition, 147 of these individuals also completed an abbreviated version of the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) which assesses the "Big Five" traits of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, And Conscientiousness. Three previously identified trait clusters (Right, Wrong, and No Stuff) were found to replicate in this population. No differences were found on th...

QSPcc reduces bottlenecks in computational model simulations2021 •
Mathematical models have grown in size and complexity becoming often computationally intractable. In sensitivity analysis and optimization phases, critical for tuning, validation and qualification, these models may be run thousands of times. Scientific programming languages popular for prototyping, such as MATLAB and R, can be a bottleneck in terms of performance. Here we show a compiler-based approach, designed to be universal at handling engineering and life sciences modeling styles, that automatically translates models into fast C code. At first QSPcc is demonstrated to be crucial in enabling the research on otherwise intractable Quantitative Systems Pharmacology models, such as in rare Lysosomal Storage Disorders. To demonstrate the full value in seamlessly accelerating, or enabling, the R&D efforts in natural sciences, we then benchmark QSPcc against 8 solutions on 24 real-world projects from different scientific fields. With speed-ups of 22000x peak, and 1605x arithmetic mean,...
