I marchi di fabbrica sulle lucerne fittili2016 •
The glass production of the Venetian Fratelli Testolini, also know as M.Q. Testolini
The Lucilii Gamalae, a big family from the elite of the city of Ostia, have been active in the colony’s public life for over two and a half centuries, from the late Republican age to the Antonine’s one. The relevance of the civil and religious roles they held, as well as the remarkable continuity of these roles over the years and generations, is unique. The aim of this paper is to follow and connect the individual members over the centuries so as to draw a history of the family. The research is based on evidence from existing prosopographical studies, which is robust in itself but punctual and disperse. Particular attention is given to the meaning of the surname Gamala, providing new evidence to support the hypothesis of a Semitic origin, as derived from a personal name in Hebrew. The paper also stresses the element of novelty represented by the discovery of an inscription related to a Gamala in loc. Vicariello, nearby the ancient Forum Clodii, city of origin of the Octavii Ligures. This significantly confirms the supposed existence, during the Republican age, of bonds of kinship - through marriage - between the two families.

The importance of the blacksmiths in medieval Pisa is attested by both the topographic location of their factories, in the heart of the city, and their economic and political power. Recent excavations near the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri has allowed to identify a metallurgic kiln associated with a residential contexts that suggests a close correlation between them. The contexts dating from the late 12th/early 13th century are characterized by an extraordinarily richness both in quantity and in variety of finds. In fact, pottery, mostly coming from the Mediterranean Islamic world, Maghreb, Tyrrhenian and southern Italy, is associated with faunal remains. This association allows to reconstruct the economic and social context to which Pisa’s blacksmiths belonged. The comparison with similar contexts in Pisa highlights for Pisa’s blacksmith a high status, connected to the figure of an entrepreneur, who lives in the political and economic centre of the city.
