Effects of Macroeconomic Trends on Social Security Spending Due to Sickness and Disability2004 •
Objectives. We analyzed the relationship between macroeconomic conditions, measured as unemployment rate and social security spending, from 4 social security schemes and total spending due to sickness and disability. Methods. We obtained aggregated panel data from 13 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development member countries for 1980–1996. We used regression analysis and fixed effect models to examine spending on sickness benefits, disability pensions, occupational-injury benefits, survivor’s pensions, and total spending. Results. A decline in unemployment increased sickness benefits spending and reduced disability pension spending. These effects reversed direction after 4 years of unemployment. Inclusion of mortality rate as an additional variable in the analysis did not affect the findings. Conclusions. Macroeconomic conditions influence some reimbursements from social security schemes but not total spending.

2017 update of the WSES guidelines for emergency repair of complicated abdominal wall hernias2017 •
Emergency repair of complicated abdominal wall hernias may be associated with worsen outcome and a significant rate of postoperative complications. There is no consensus on management of complicated abdominal hernias. The main matter of debate is about the use of mesh in case of intestinal resection and the type of mesh to be used. Wound infection is the most common complication encountered and represents an immense burden especially in the presence of a mesh. The recurrence rate is an important topic that influences the final outcome. A World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) Consensus Conference was held in Bergamo in July 2013 with the aim to define recommendations for emergency repair of abdominal wall hernias in adults. This document represents the executive summary of the consensus conference approved by a WSES expert panel. In 2016, the guidelines have been revised and updated according to the most recent available literature.

Latex agglutination-negative methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus recovered from neonates: epidemiologic features and comparison of typing methods1992 •
An unusual strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was repeatedly isolated from infants in a newborn special care unit (NBSC) and a newborn intensive care unit. Between January 1989 and March 1990, approximately 100 isolates from infected or colonized infants were recovered. Surveillance cultures taken during this time revealed a 20% colonization rate, which was defined as recovery of MRSA from the nares, umbilicus, or groin. Isolates were identified as S. aureus by tube coagulase reactivity and heat-stable nuclease production but were unreactive in a latex agglutination assay. Representative isolates that were collected during the outbreak and that were found to share the latex agglutination assay-negative phenotype were compared by antibiogram (12 isolates), bacteriophage typing (20 isolates), capsular polysaccharide typing (30 isolates), and plasmid as well as chromosomal DNA analyses (20 isolates). All isolates known to be associated with the outbreak had ne...
