Description of two small fragments of textile associated with the Roman fort at Xanten on the Lower Rhine.

Bits and pieces: 1st-century AD horse gear from Roman military sites on the Lower Rhine2018 •
Over the years, many pieces of horse gear have been recovered from Roman military sites along the Lower Rhine. These finds can offer insight into the composition of the Roman army operating in Germania inferior. This army was, especially during the 1st century AD, highly mobile and consisted of various units, but which units precisely is not clear. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether previous attributions with respect to some items of horse gear still hold true and to examine whether more items can be added to this list. Two published case studies serve as starting points: the so-called ring bits recovered at Krefeld-Gellep in Germany, and a diverse set of riding spurs found at Nijmegen-Kops Plateau in the Netherlands. They constitute the starting point for an investigation of early Imperial cavalry equipment from the Lower Rhine region.
Archaeological Textiles Review
K. Saunderson/K. Grömer/L. C. Formato, Missing Link: Early Roman textiles and Norican-Pannonian female dress from Potzneusiedl, Austria. Archaeological Textiles Review 64, 2023, 28 - 38.2023 •
Cremation was the most widespread burial tradition during the Early Roman period in the provinces of Noricum and Pannonia, thus leaving a gap in the archaeological record of in situ dress components, including the textiles. In this context, the fist century CE inhumation burials from Potzneusiedl, eastern Austria, are unique, representing the only known inhumations from this period and region. Additionally, some of the women’s in situ brooches carry textile remains belonging to their clothing. Their analysis provided interesting technical and functional information. The textiles demonstrate both La Tène as well as Roman characteristics, representing a missing link between the periods. The locations and microstratigraphy of the textiles also reveal how the garments were worn, and this is comparable with the pictorial evidence on the large number of tombstones of the area from the first to second century CE.
The paper aims to present the state of research on Roman Period archaeological textiles and new, 21 st century perspectives for further analyses. The textiles proves to be important from the viewpoint of provincial economy, trade and cultural exchange. That is why, a special emphasis is put on the textile types, which are called Roman imports.

SOME WOOL TEXTILE FRAGMENTS FROM THE ROMAN PORT OF OIASSO (IRUN, SPAIN) (In English)2018 •
Wool textiles as an archaeological material are rarely preserved in the provinces of Roman Hispania. The area around the Roman city of Oiasso (modern-day Irun) has yielded almost the majority of all the textiles found in this region thus far. In 2008 and 2009, a group of fragments were discovered inside the humid environment of a mine at Arditurri, part of the Oiasso mining district. In this article we present two additional textiles recovered from the bottom of the harbour, kept humid by the daily tides in the city’s port. Found with these textiles was a group of instrumenta textilia, which allows us to observe some aspects of textile production methods.
