Abstract:
In this paper new finds from the Early
Byzantine forts of Stari Ulcinj and Djuteza are
presented, while there is also an overview of
Early Medieval battle-axes from the banks of
Zeta river, more specifically the site “Pod Milovu
Luku”. The number of Early Byzantine finds has
continuously grown, at the same time it is heavily
underrepresented in the scientific community. This
paper represents a segment toward the contribution
of material culture of the aforementioned period.
Mostly metal finds are discussed: parts of clothing
and gear, as well reasearching tools and weapons
discovered through surveying or as chance finds.

Stari Ulcinj is a small island (220 m long and
100 m wide), geologically cut off and at a distance
of 180 m from continental land, almost half way
between Bar and Ulcinj (Fig. 1). On the eastern side,
facing land, there is a 44 m cliff with two notches.
From there, the terrain gradually declines toward
northwest. Life on the island has been confirmed
through archaeological material spanning from
the Hellenistic period, continuing through Roman

Imperial, Late Antique and Early Byzantine periods,
when it was refortified, testified by the remains of
the fortification wall along the edge of the island. In
the XI ventury skete (eremitic) monastery was built,
with a small church with a chrypt (Загарчанин 2015,
93-95). No systematic archaeological excavations
have been undertaken at the island, although there
have been some sondage excavations in 1974,
when the church, a cistern and remains of other
unidentified objects were discovered (Mijović 1988,
149-158). 1
The first meaningful find discovered
through the survey of Stari Ulcinj is an Early
Byzantine buckle of the Syracuse type, dated to
the 6th and the beginning of the 7th century (Fig.
3:10a, 10b). It is a cast single-pie ce bronze buckle
with an ellipsoid frame, with a bedding for a prong
and a heart-shaped mount decorated with stylized
ornaments. On the reverse side, there are three
perforated, upright rivets that held a leather belt,
as well as a hole for the strengthening of the iron
prong. They are discovered throughout a wide area,
also beyond the borders of the Empire. They were

1 The first archaeological information about the Old Ucinj can
be encountered in the writings of Pavel Apolonovič Rovinski
at the beginning of the twentieth century, where he mentions
the existence of the city wall and its gate. After almost a
century, the first preliminary examination of the site occurred
in 1974. Subsequently, in the year of 1984 first archaeological
survey, in the form of the test pits or sondages, revealed the
remains of the secular and sacral architecture in the Island
(Mijović 1988, 149-158)

(Mijović 1988, 149-158).

(Werner, 1955, 40 Abb.
(Vinski, 1974, 28, Csállany,
1954, T. VI, 3; Werner, 1955, број 1-8; Garam, 2002,

initially distinguished as Syracuse type by Werner
(Werner, 1955, 37), while in more recent times they
are also identified as Schulze-Dörrlamm’s type D
12 (Schulze-Dörrlamm 2007, 9). There are several
variants of these Byzantine buckles, the Stari Ulcinj
example belongs to variant 2, according to its
ornaments. The mount is decorated as two semipalmettes in shallow relief. The central motif is a
stylized flower between the palmettes. They are
found throughout the Meditteranean, as well as
other parts of the periphery of the Empire. The
map of their distribution contains more than 75
sites, some of them containing several examples.
They have been found in Sussex in England, to the
Caucasus and Sassanid Iran to the East, as well
as Upper Egypt in the South (Riemer 2000). It is
difficult to find another Byzantine type of buckles
that was produced as much as the Syracuse type.
The Bal-Gota belt buckle (Fig. 3: 5a, 5b) is
named by the eponymous site in Crimea, initially
classified by Werner (Werner 1955, 40 Abb. 5).
They are found throughout the Mediterranean: in
Dalmatia, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Asia Minor, Crimea,
as well as in Hungary (Vinski 1974, 28, Csállany
1954, T. VI, 3; Werner 1955, број 1-8; Garam 2002,
34.1). In the vicinity they are discovered in
Budva and Svač, where two differently decorated
examples were identified, with circles on the upper
28/5). One example was discovered In
Ston in Pelješac, with an arched pendant (Вински
1974: T. 20.6), of the “Komani” type. Dj. Janković
moved their dating toward the 8th century, while
he considers their usage span to cover the first half
of the 9th century (Јанковић 2007, 75). In Athens,
the Bal-Gota type of buckles are dated to the
second half of the 7th and the first half of the 8th
century (Natalia Poulou et al 2017). In the area of
the Komani-Kruja culture they have been recovered
from the necropolis of Komani (Spahiu 1971: Т. 5.
12). They are dated to the period between between
7th and 9th century, based on the examples from
Crimea (Айбабин 1982, 176).
Mold-cast bronze buckle are very common
among Early Byzantine finds (Fig. 3: 2). They have
a pronounced prong setting on the front side and
a thin base for the needle on the back side. Similar
buckle was discovered in the necropolis at Mijela
2018, 121, T1: 4). There are similar
ones in Kruja, dated to the 7th century (Animali,
Nova Antička Duklja X
Zagarčanin, O metalnim nalazima...
Spahiu 1979/80: 103, T11/8; Nallbani 2005, 274,
sl.2). Elipsoidall ol ovoid buckle with a flat base of
shape B are very common in the area of Western
Russia before the end of the 5th and the beginning
of the 6th century (Бајан, Каргаполчев 1989, str
30, sl. 1-34, str. 31 sl. 2, str. 33 sl. 3). There are also
similar examples of buckles from the necropolis of
Čirjutsk (Гавритухин, Обломски 1996, 262 T8032, 33). Similar type are also discovered in Aradac
1980, 70-12), the East Gothic ones
from Obrovac, Stranjane and the vicinity of Split
1980, XXVIII, 10, 11, 12), as well as the
Langobard example from Stopic (Mrkobrad 1980,
60, 15).
The zoomorphic bronze fibula (Fig. 3: 3a, 3b)
was cast in a mold, while the circular decorations
were achieved by incision. It is a fibula with the
representation of a horse with a bent head, in which
horn-shaped ears and forehead are visible, while
the mouth and nostrils are heart-shaped, with a
mildly pronounced chin. The saddle is represented
with two stylized horns, while the thighs are bent
with the tail. All four legs of the horse are fixed
on a rectangular frame, through which the fibula
acquires its firmness. The phallus of the horse is
visible, implying a certain symbolic meaning. The
back-side of the fibula is flat, with two rectangular
holders for the iron needle from which only oxidized
traces remain. A similar one was discovered in
Ljesh, with a ornithomorphic mount, a knife, buckle
and a ring (Nallbani 2007, сл. 13). The lower part,
the head and the body of the fibula are similarly
shaped, and there is no doubt that they most
probably originate from the same workshop. The
difference between these two examples is in the
representation on the back of the horse, a birdlike figure in movement. A circular bird’s head with
with a beak (?) can be distinguished, the body
ending in a tail and feet reclining on the saddle of
the horse. Horse-shaped fibulae decorated with
incised circles have been discovered in Cutrofiano
(Salento), Venusio (Basilicata), Pietra Durante
(Avellino province) and Atella (Basilicata), dated to
the 7th century. Two were recovered in the Marche
province, in Langobard burials from the 6th and 7th
century, kept in the museum Ascoli Piceno (Arthur
1996, 434; Profumo 1995, 19/105; 20/106). Out
of these two horse-shaped fibulae, one is almost
identical to the fibula from Stari Ulcinj (Profumo
1995, 20/106). In Italy, different variants of this type
2018, 121, T1: 4).
у 7. вијек (Animali, Spahiu, 1979/80: 103, T11/8;
Nallbani, 2005, 274, sl.2).
Пићено (Arthur, 1996, 434; Profumo, 1995, 19/105;

of fibulae have been identified, with the decoration
with two facing horse-heads: in Cutrofiano, in the
south of Italy; and near Rovereta at the site of
Toretto in the North Italy. Both are connected with
the Byzantine-Langobard cultural interchange,
as well as the fibulae from the museum of Ascoli
Piceno (Arthur 1996, 434).
Finds with horse representation were also
discovered in Salona (Вински 1974, ТХ, 1-5), but
not even remotely close to the character and
manufacture to the previous ones. The fibula from
Stari Ulcinj could be dated in the context of the
Komani-Kruja culture from Lesha (Lissos), implying
a manufacture in the second half of the 7th century,
and consequent later usage.
The bronze buckle (Fig. 3: 4a, 4b), type D 20
(Schulze-Dörrlamm 2007, 191, 192, sl. 169, 170,
171). The buckle is profiled on both sides, while at
the end it is decorated with shallow incisions. Over
the upper surface of the buckle a X-shaped motif
is incised (Andreaskreuz), while under the buckle
there is a perforation for the enclosement of a
bronze needle. On the back there is a rectangular
hook for the belt. In the same belt assortiment an
additional decorational propeller-shaped bronze
aplicatioins was identified; according to its incised
endings and width of the buckle, it is most probably
that belonged to the same equipment (Fig. 3: 6a,
6b). These type of buckles are found in Greece: on
Samos (Gimnasium, Grave 5); in the Mausoleum
basilica in Kraneion at Corinth they are dated to the
7th century according to coins minted during the
reign of Constantine II (641-668); in Athens, Plateia
and Karakonisi. In Crimea it has been discovered in
Skalistoje (tomb 354), along a Syracuse type buckle;
in Eski-Kermen (grave 257), where it was found in
the belt area of a child’s skeleton, In Chersonesus,
Luchyste (grave 10) and Uzena. There are three
samples in Asia Minor, while in Rome they were
discovered in Crypta Balbi and Chiaramonte-Gulfi,
as well as Sicily (Schulze-Dörrlamm 2007, 190, 191,
The one-piece belt buckle made of bronze
in a mould with fittings in the form of the three
connected circles (Fig. 3: 9). This partially preserved
buckle can find the analogy with the buckle from
the grave No. 33 in Bukel in Mirdita (Animali 1971,
T VII/1). Based on this comparison, it is possible to
conclude that the buckle had an ellipsoidal shape
with a bearing for a short thorn in the middle. In the
(Schulze-Dörrlamm, 2007, 191, 192, sl. 169, 170,
(Schulze-Dörrlamm,

Shultze-Dorllam (Shultze-Dorllam, 1999, 227,
(Tartari, 1987, 248, TIII
(Oikonomides, 1985, str. 20).

grave No. 34, also in Bukel, were found: one typically
Koman iron fibula and stylised zoomorphic fetter as
well as a frog-shaped buckle (Animali, 1971, 217).
The frog-shaped buckle, better known as a buckle
type Gater or D 37, according to Shultze-Dorllam
(Shultze-Dorllam 1999, 227, 222), is being dated to
the middle of the seventh of the century.
The one-piece cast bronze buckle with
ellipsoidal frame and rectangular hook (Fig. 3: 8).
The upper surface of the obliquely profiled ellipsoid
section, is ornamented with lines around the needle
tray and rivers along the circumference of the outer
edge of the frame. The incision was made after
casting. A very similar buckle has been excavated
in the grave No. 29, inside the necropolis discovered
in Drac, and it has been dated with the moneta of
Constantine II Pogonat (Tartari 1987, 248, TIII 7).
However, these types of buckles have not been
found, so far, in the area of the east Adriatic coast,
primarily in Istria and Dalmatia.
Two lead seals represent significant finds
as well (Fig. 3: 1, 2; Fig. 4: 1, 2). The first one is
not very well preserved, although the invocatory
monogram of Mother-of-God Theotokos, while the
reverse is illegible. The Greek inscription is incused
in three lines, but because of the oxidation it is not
possible to identify its content. The other seal also
has the invocatory monogram of Mother-of-God
Theotokos on the obverse, while on the reverse
there is a cruciform monogram, most probably
of a personal name. Cruciform monograms with
letters on the cross appear in the 6th century and
survive as a dominant form until the 10th century.
(Oikonomides 1985, 20).
An exceptional find in the group of metal
finds from Stari Ulcinj is a bronze follis of
Constantius II (641-668) and Constantine IV
(diam.: 23 mm, weight: 2.38 g), struck in the mint
of Syracuse (Fig. 3: 1, 2). The follis does not have
an inscription, with Constantius on the left and
Constantine (crowned) on the right side (Fig. 3: 1).
The long-life on the Island and its economy,
fishing and olive oil production, have been proven
by material data, above all with a large number of
amphora fragments from various Mediterranean
productions. Large quantities of fishing lead have
also been found. These are small weights that
were used to cast nets and fishing longlines, they
are extremely important for reconstructing fishing
methods within the established unit in Old Ulcinj

(Fig. 9). During the archaeological survey, a certain
number of fragments of Gnathia vases and a fragile
mug of geometric style was also found. These
pottery fragments were of Apulian production,
leading us to the 2-3 century BC.
Also found were various examples of
Hellenistic bowls and pots made on a (fast winch/
wheel), which further completes the picture of
ancient lifestyles in this place. The small number
of the Greek finds merely indicates the general
process of Greek colonisation and the strong
trade links with the Greek colonies in the South of
Italy. One pendant in the shape of an ox head, of
exceptional craft value, is particularly interesting.
This apotropaic symbol, through its stylisation,
sublimates the artistic processes that began in
the time of the Creto-Mycenaean civilisation, then
extended through the craft of the Greek poleis,
and gained its final form in the shape of this found
object, during the I or II century AD.
An insufficiently clear geological picture and
time of separation of the Island from the mainland,
prevents us from figuring out the relationship of
the large villa latifundia in Kruče, several hundred
meters above, on the far edge of the former
peninsula. Here, Mijović, Peročević and Mašanović
had discovered a part of a Roman villa with a
mosaic, and dated it with the coins of the Byzantine
emperors Anastasius, Justin and Justinian (Mijović
1988), although it was evident that this was a hoard

(Bugaj et all 2013,
156).

villa and not a valid element for dating such a large
complex.
Djuteza near village Dinosha
This Illyrian and Byzantine fort (In Alb. Quteze;
slav. Gradina, Gradac), located above the village of
Dinosha in Malesia (7 km from Podgorica), was
excavated for the first time by Olivera Velimirović
1986). According to its
disposition, it is a typical fortification from the Early
Middle Ages because of the way the walls are made,
fitting in the general scheme of similar defensive
solutions of refugial or stationary character,
adapting to the configuration of the terrain. During
the Early Middle Ages it was used to control a very
important part of the communication connecting
Scodra and Doclea.
The Byzantine fortification has an almost
horseshoe shape, and it surrounds the peak of a
hill to the west, east and north, while to the south
it linearly follows the direction of Iron age wall of
the acropolis. The entire length of the fortification
wall is 116 m, and it encircles an area of 26 acres
(Fig. 7).
The western tower has a horseshoe-shape,
connected to the outer fortification wall. To the
southeastern side there is a passage through
the fortification wall, where stairs have been
discovered leading to the inside of the tower (Fig.
7). The northern tower is the least preserved one
and only its horseshoe-shape can be recognized.
The communication is open from the southeast,
connecting the inside of the tower with the fortified
area. The eastern tower has a horseshoe, almost
pentagonal shape. It is 5.8 m long, with an entrance
with a width of 0.96 m, located on its southeastern,
outer side, isolating it from the inside of the fortified
area (Bugaj et al 2013, 156).
A church is located in the heart of the
fortification, as the central building of the town,
oriented southeast - northwest. It is a very
rustic, single-aisled building, 8.1 X 4.2 m, with a
rectangular room added on the northern side,
and a wall dividing it in two parts. In the eastern
part there is a circular baptismal piscine, while
the other enclosed space, open to the west, was
most probably the catechumenium, paved in its
last phase. On the western side there is a narthex

(Velimirović Žižič, 1986).
added to the nave. It seems that the older apse was
destroyed to make way for a new, more rustic one,
built most probably during the 9th century (Fig. 5).
The Byzantine fortification of the 6th century
was distinguished through the identification of the
destruction layers of the older, Illyrian fortification,
with certain corrections of the concerned area. It
kept the predispositions typical for the pre-antiquity
and post-antiquity era, such as the position as
a strategic point, as well as traffic and other
conditions (Velimirović, Žižič, 1986). During the
latest excavations a certain amount of Hellenistic
material was discovered, in the form of coins of the
period, as well as pottery from the 6th century AD,
mostly fragments of Late Roman 1 amphorae.
The most significant find in the excavations
is a bronze buckle, discovered in a grave inside
the church (Fig. 6: 1, 2). The buckle is a variant of
Sucidava-Beroe II (Petre, 1987). Although Petre
dated them to the 6th century, this type of belt

Late Roman 1.
Sucidava–Beroe II
(Petre, 1987).
(570-630.) (Csallány, 1961, str 45-46; XXIII/10-15 8).
buckle can be dated to the first half of the 7th
century, based on analogies of Grave 7 of the
Szentes-Nagyhegy necropolis in Hungary, where
buckles of this type were discovered along a singleedged avar sword, weapons typical for the Early
Avar period (570-630) (Csallány, 1961, pp. 45-46;
XXIII/10-15 8).
Another very important find from Djuteza
belonged to a hoard of woodworking and other
tools from the 6th and 7th centuries (Fig. 8). There
were nine different tools discovered: 1. Iron adze
with a semicircular blade with a deltoid shape and
a hammer with a square cross section on the back
side. In the middle there is a perforation for holder,
with triangular extensions on the sides (Fig. 8: 1).;
2.?) with a long deltoid-shaped blade on the front
side with a shorter semicircular axe on the back
side. In the middle there is a circular aperture for
the handle with triangular extensions on the sides
(Fig. 8: 2); 3. Axe with an elongated neck ending
in a semicircular blade on the front, and a short
hammer with a square cross section on the back
side. The opening is circular, with two triangular
extensions on the sides (Fig. 8: 3); Iron rasp (Fig.
8: 4); 5. Semicircular scarper with a semicircular
blade ending on both ends in iron handles (Fig.
8: 5); 6. Iron chisel (?) with a sharp end on one
side and a horizontal one on the other (Fig. 8: 6).
7. Smaller iron knife with a mildly curved, deltoid
shaped blade and a horizontal upper part (Fig. 8:
Nova Antička Duklja X

7). 8. Tool (?) with a semi lunular shape with two
perforations on its blade, widened on one side, with
a hole in the middle (Fig. 8: 8); 9. Adze with a deltoid
shape and a circular opening, flattened on its back
side (Fig 8: 9).
There are multiple hoards from the 6th and
first half of the 7th century in our country, although
only several will be mentioned. Hoards consisting
of woodworking tools have been discovered in
Bosiljkovac and Poljani (Шпехар, Јацановић
2014), Rujkovac
(Бугарски, Иванишевић, 2013), Gradina na
Jelici (Милинковић 2010), Čečen and Gamzigrad
Woodworking
tools have also been discovered as grave offerings
in the Late Antique (Early Medieval?) grave 555,
from the necropolis of Relja in Zadar (Глушчевић
2015). In Bosiljkovac an adze with a hammer was
discovered, dated to the 3rd - 4th century, type A
according to Popovic (Поповић 1988, 52), although
the authors noticed that the analogous parallels
come from Boljetin and Caričin Grad, dated to the
6th century (Шпехар, Јацановић 2011, 30). In the
tool hoard in Poljani there were two adzes with a
hammer discovered, type A, widely dated between
the 4th and 7th century (Шпехар, Јацановић 2014,
T IV, 14, 15). The adzes from hoards belonging to
the beginning of the 7th century from Gradina na
21, 22), are very different from the adzes from the
Cuteza hoard, primarily because of the lack of the
hammer on the back side, but also because of the
manner of forging of the deltoid shaped blade. The
Adze from Djuteza is almost the same as the one

from Supersano, on the other side of the Adriatic
coast, in Apulia, where it is dated to the second half
of the 10th century, although the author mentions
that it is more similar to finds from the Balkans,
than those in Italy and the Mediterranean (Arthur
2012, fig, 4, fig. 5). In a tomb in Relja, a type of adze
a little bit different from the one from Cuteza was
discovered, with an elongated hammer extension
on its back side. The author dates it to the 3rd - 4th
century (Глушчевић 2015, сл. 10-11, 60).
A mattock-axe (Fig. 8: 2) is a versatile
tool used in antiquity, under the name securusdolabrata or dolabra (Поповић 1988, 58). In the
Rujkovac hoard two were discovered (Бугарски,
1/1, 150), the second
one not really analogous to the one from Cuteza
The
reasons are the non-existent triangular extensions
and an elongated axe, which is reminiscent
more of a classical pickaxe than the one from
the Gradina in Dinoša. The example from Gornji
Streoc is perhaps the one that is most similar to
the mattock from Cuteza, with a pronounced part
from the deltoid extension, continuing into a short
axe with a mildly rounded blade, while the deltoid
shape of the pickaxe is narrower in comparison
to the previously mentioned finds (Иванишевић,
2005, 6/4). They are also found in Early
Byzantine fortifications on the mouth of Slatina
river and Diana (Шпехар 2007, 392, 397), as well
as Poljani (Шпехар, Јацановић 2014, Т1, 2, 3)
where they are significantly different than the find
presented here.
Scarperrs are surely the most spread out tool
in the Early Medieval hoards (Curtа 1997, 211-268).
In antiquity they are mentioned as a group of tools
under the name of scaprum (Поповић 1988, 114).
They are usually semicircular, almost flat blades,
with two TRN forming a 90 degree angle, such as
the example from Caričin Grad (Bavant, Ivanišević
2003, Pl. XLVII, 1), bent in a semicircular shape with
handles and a slightly curved blade, as the example
from the Early Byzantine fortification of Diana
431), or the two examples from
Gradina na Jelici (Васић 2017, 176, кат. 312, 313).
STRUGAC are also found in Gamzigrad, in hoard
no. 3 (Бугарски, Иванишевић 2013, 140, 141).
Until recently, Early Medieval axes, tools and
weapons from Montenegro were not familiar. Only

were published, three axes that were chance finds,
discovered by locals. In the last several years, the
finds of the publicist S. Vučinić2, found on one of
the draughts of Zeta, with the name Pod Milovu
Luku, discovered during one of his many amateur
research activities, 23 battle axes which will be
briefly commented here, including the find of an
Early Medieval axe with a widened blade, from the
Illyrian-Roman and LAte Antique-Early Medieval
fortification of Oblun on the Skadar Lake.
The draught Pod Milovu Luku that contained
23 axes, is located in a spot where the road to Doclea
passed. The axes are very well preserved, most
probably as a result of their position on the sandy
(Bavant, Ivanišević, 2003, Pl.

Тип I (Сл. 10: 1-4)
(Spahiu, 1969, Tab. III/4; Spahiu, 1971,
Tab. I/4, 236, fig. 3; Ugolini, 1907, fig. 37, pg 48,
12; Nallbani, 2014, fig. 14; Prendi, 1980, T 3/13).
159
bottom at a depth of around 7 meters, preventing
corrosion. Based on certain characteristics of the
finds, an attempt has been made to determine a
certain typology of these finds so that we could
determine its dating and their possible cultural
affiliation.
Type I (Fig. 10: 1-4)
Axes with a narrow, elongated neck with a
crescent-shaped or flat blade, triangular extensions
around the opening and a hammer, are one of the
most common types of axes in the period between
the 7th and 9th century, while in a slightly changed
variants, they were used even later. The axe from
Mijela belongs to this type (Загарчанин 2018, 57,
сл.6), as well as the axe from the Cuteza hoard (Fig.
10: 3). According to the find location of these types
of axes, the Komani examples are the closest,
discovered in great numbers on sites in northern
and central Albania (Spahiu 1969, Tab. III/4; Spahiu
1971, Tab. I/4, 236, fig. 3; Ugolini 1907, fig. 37, pg
48, 12; Nallbani 2014, fig. 14; Prendi 1980, T 3/13).
Similar characteristics are found in examples from
the area of Great Moravia, on the following sites:
Boršice, Bošovice, Brno, Breclav, Držovice, Hluk
15, 6-14). In Croatia, there is at least
one axe that belongs to this type, discovered in
Biskupija (Белошевић 1980, Т ХХХIII, 3), close to
the finds from the graves of Avars and Slavs of
the First Khaganate in Lovćenc, Bijelo Brdo, Vrbas,
as well as Avars of the second wave: in Zemun,
Popovac, Slankamen (Мркобрад 1980, LХХХ/9-11,
TCXXXVIII 1, 2). From this group of finds, a variant
Ib can be distinguished (Fig. 10: 2, 3) - the blade
has a crescent shape, and it can be compared to
the find from Kula Mihajlovac, a Slav settlement
dated to 615-680 (Јанковић М и Ђ 1990, 101,
76/5). The variant Ib (Fig. 10: 4) with a more deltoid
shaped neck, ending in an almost flat blade, is
also discovered in Komani-Kruja culture (Spahiu
1961, Tab. I/1), as well as the First Avar Khaganate
8), the site of Naretski
Novaci (Симони 1983, 251, Т1/3). Dostal classified
similar axes in group II, separating them from the
finds in Slav necropoleis of Great Moravia: Drzovila,
Hradisko v Kromčiže, Luhočovice, Penčin (Dostal
1966, 69, II).

(Dostal, 1966, 69, II).
Type II (Fig. 10: 5, 13)
This type does not have a hammer, and is
almost flat on its back side; it does not have the
triangular extensions, characteristic for the group,
while the neck has a more deltoid shape than
the others and ends in a flat blade. There are no
analogies, especially in the Komani-Kruja culture.
Similar finds determined to the Early Middle Ages
were discovered in Slovenia. An axe of a similar
shape was pulled out of the river Ljubljanica (Knific
2010, pl. 2, 5), while one was found in the hoard
of Zidani gabe above Mihovo (Knific 2010, pl. 4, 9).
An almost identical one was found in grave 48, in
Velika Gorica near Zagreb, and a very similar one in
grave 49 from the same site (Hrvati i Karolinzi 2000,
107, II48 a-b, 108, II 49). It can also be claimed that
a similar axe was found at Jelica, dated to the 6th
century (Васић 2017, стр. 307)
Type III (Fig. 10: 6-10)
These are characteristic battle axes,
because their neck is sharply broken off or bent
in a semicircular shape, increasing the power
and tenacity of the hit, so it can be identified as a
typical battle axe. Also, they are characterized by
triangular extensions and a hammer on the back
side. Between the finds from the draught of Pod
Milovu Luku, there are two distinguishable variants:
IIIa (Fig. 10: 6, 8), where the neck is mildly bent;
IIIb (Fig. 10: 7, 9, 10), where the neck has a sharply
pronounced elbow shape. Two such examples
were discovered in hoard 3 from Gamzigrad
in the hoard of StraZevo (Бугарски, Иванишевић
2, 5), one with a mildly bent neck on the
site Kula Mihajlovac (Јанковић М. и Ђ, 1990, 78,
15) and one in Komani (Ugolini 1927, fig 39, pg. 1,
12). Inside Byzantine fortifications in Đerdap there
are four such axes discovered: Ljubičac Glamija or
Ušće Slatinske Reke, Hajdučka Vodenica, Dijana,
Mihajlovac (Шпехар 2010, кат. 420-431). They are
also found in Caričin Grad (Bavant 1990, 225, cat.
no 218, pl. XXXVIII/218; Bavant, Ivanišević 2003,
XLV/4) and Gamzigrad (Живић 2003: 147, кат.
289). Among the presented finds, one axe draws
more attention (Fig. 10: 7), since it seems that it
belonged to an important person, probably of a
higher social status. It is exceptionally well made,
(Hrvati
i Karolinzi 2000, 107, II48 a-b, 108, II 49).

(Ugolini, 1927, fig 39, pg.
(Bavant, 1990,
225, cat. no 218, pl. XXXVIII/218; Bavant, Ivanišević,
(Filipec, 2010, 140).
161
has a nice shape of the neck, blade and hammer,
and is decorated with incisions in the shape
of pseudo-stars, filling the space between the
triangular extensions, framed with three incised
lines on both sides.
Type IV (Fig. 10: 11, 12, 14)
Although it seems that they are only a
variant of Type I, these axes should be treated
separately. So far none of these types of axes has
not been discovered to the south of Marinbrod
near Sisak (Filipec 2010, 136-138, sl. 2, sl. 3). They
appear very often in Avar period graves, where the
width of the blades distinguishes two variations,
one with a narrow, and one with a wider blade. It
is similar to the Hungarian fokos axe, ideal for
the battles of cavalries (Filipec 2010, 138). This
type of axe was discovered in Devinska Nova Ves,
in grave 95 (Eisner 1952, 2003, 30, 31, T/107). It
leads to the conclusion that they appear in graves
of the 7th and 8th century, in Moravian graves of
the 9th century, and among Hungarian finds of the
9th - 11th century, belonging to nomadic peoples,
especially Avars (Filipec 2010, 140).
Type V (Fig. 10: 15-22)
In the fifth group the so called bearded axes
(from the german word bartaxt), with a one sided
widened blade, triangular extensions around the
opening and a hammer extension on the back,
shorter or longer. They more or less appear in the
Roman empire, and in the Early Middle Ages they
represent one of the most spread lethal axes in
Europe. These samples mostly rely on Komani
finds, since the shape and manufacture seem
to belong to the same workshops (Spahiu 1969,
T3/1,2,3; Spahiu 1971, T1/2, 3, TII/1-3; Spahiu,
Komata 1975, 6; Nallbani 2007, sl. 13;
2018, sl. 6, 55, 56). The still open question of
dating this cultural group does not allow precise
chronological determination, but it will contribute
toward placing them in a wider context, based on
various approaches to dating, appearing in the
complicated processing of this material by multiple
authors, most often widely between the 6th and 9th
century. Bearded axes of this type are very common
in Moravia in the 9th century, distinguished in types
IIIa and IIIb by Dostal (Dostal 1966, 69). In Croatia

(Spahiu
1969, T3/1,2,3; Spahiu, 1971, T1/2, 3, TII/1-3; Spahiu,
Komata, 1975, 6; Nallbani, 2007, sl. 13;
2018, sl. 6, 55, 56).
IIIb (Dostal,
(Hrvati i Karolinzi, 2000, str. 106,
they are extremely rare. There are two discovered
so far, in Velika Gorica near Zagreb, from a grave
dated to the 9th century (Hrvati i Karolinzi 2000, str.
106, II. 47, grob 17), as well as from Medvedichak,
from the same period (Vinski 1977, T XVII). In
Moravia they are dated mainly in the 9th century,
discovered at numerous sites, the most significant
ones being Breclav, Stara Zvolence and KoliCHin,
according to Dostal they are classified as types III
аб (Dostal, 1966, 69, IIIа IIIб).
Type VI (Fig. 10: 23)
The sixth type of axes is characteristic by
its elbow shape bent neck and a wider crescent
shaped blade, flat on both sides. Around the
circular opening there are triangular extensions,
and on the back side there is a hammer. Along the
find from the draught of Pod Milovu Luku (Fig. 10:
23), the chance find from the fortification of Oblun
on the Skadar Lake is also published (Fig. 10: 24).
The forging technique is completely different from
the previously mentioned examples. This type of
axe was made by combining two parts of the elbow
shape bent neck. It was achieved by hammering
the back side and consequent insertion of the front
part, followed by several hardenings, until both
sides are joined. The find from Oblun is separated on
this exact spot, so the forging technique is clearly
visible. Such an axe was excavated at Komani
(Spahiu 1971, TI/6), while A. Milosevic turned the
attention toward it after researching an analogous
find from the river Cetina, near Trilj, dating it to the
beginning of the 6th century, based on a similar
find from Naratski Novaci (Simoni 1982, 252, TII/2).
Three similar axes of this type were discovered in
an Early Byzantine fortification in Đerdap, Diana
2010, 426-429), one is known from Donji
Butorak (Јанковић 1981, 178, sl. 72/b; Шпехар
230). Still, the find from the draught
of the river should be dated in concordance with
Komani Kruja culture, in the period between the 7th
and 9th century.
If we take into consideration that during
this publication a much more complex Byzantine
presence was proven, as well as the fortification of
the 6th and 7th century on the island of Stari Ulcinj,
then the expectation from further systematic
archaeological excavations is immense, and
offers hope toward a significant impact toward

публикованих радова (Bošković, 1962; Zagаrčanin, 2008; Загарчанин, 2012; Zagarčanin, 2013;
Zagarčanin, 2017; Gelichi, Guštin, 2005; Gelichi,
2006; Gelichi, 2008; Gelichi, 2011, Gelichi, Zagarčanin, 2013, Baudo et al 2006).
archaeological science. It is the case with the
fortifications of Cuteza and Oblun (partially
excavated and unpublished), and especially the
city of Svač, which is most certainly one of the
most significant Early Medieval sites in this part
of Europe. This is also true for a neglected part of
Montenegrin archaeology, the study of underwater
finds of the Zeta river and the Skadar Lake. We
have extensively demonstrated how much a river
draught, that was part of the communication
toward Doclea, can contribute archaeological data
from the period between the 7th and 9th century.
The finds from Pod Milovu Luku imply a new
direction of thinking, moving from the area of the
Komani-Kruja culture toward the Slavic population
of Zeta and vice-versa: mutual influences, multiple
contacts that had to be there more than they are
represented in modern science (cultural influences,
funerary practices, etc.). These implications are
practically unknown territory which shall, in the
lack of written sources, archaeology could answer
some questions, but, this must be preceded by
complicated work, starting with new excavations,
all the way through publishing unpublished
materials from older excavations from the museum
depots of Montenegro. The finds from Justinianic
times (527-565) all the way through Heraclius
(575-641), create an image for the migration of two
great Slavic peoples in the provinces of Dalmatia,
Croats and Serbs, described by Constantine
Porphyrogenitus in his De Administrando Imperio.
With this, the material culture of the Early Byzantine
period in Montenegro becomes much wider, so that
we can afford to create a certain archaeological
image for the area before the Migration Period.
Everything after the first half of the 7th century is
still tabula rasa, and requires permanent research,
since the question of the Byzantine cities and
fortifications from the second half of the 7th until
the 10th century is not even remotely clear. I would
like to specify the relation of the Slavic kingdom
of Doclea (Zeta) with the remaining Romaioi, and
its consistent expanding toward the sea after the
decline of Komani-Kruja culture in the 9th century,
discussed in the previous issue of Nova Anticka
Duklja (Загарчанин 2018).
The continuity of life on the island of Stari
Ulcinj, and its agriculture, fishing and oil production,
have been proven by material culture. A large
amount of fragments of amphorae produced in

various Mediterranean cities has been identified.
The underwater excavations brought to light finds
of globular amphorae of Byzantine origin, dated
to the period between the 7th and 9th century, in
the area of the island harbor. Various pottery from
the same period was also discovered (Загарчанин
2013). On the island a large amount of lead weights
have also been discovered, used as fishing weights
sinking the fishing nets in water. This information
implies other activities regarding agriculture, not
only production of olive oil.
The unclear geological framework and the
period of the island separating from land, does not
allow us to identify the relation of the great villa
discovered around the cape of Kruča. Mosaics
and rooms from a Roman villa, were incorrectly
dated according to coin hoards from the Byzantine
emperors Anastasius, Justin and Justinian
1988), since it is evident that the hoards
belong to the last phase of existence. The hoard is
connected with the general fears of the time, of the
Avar and Slavic attacks. On the surface, a certain
number of fragments of Gnatia vases, as well as
fragments of vessels of the Apulian geometrical
style from the 3rd and 2nd century BC have been
identified, but in order to be able to comment on
the entire area in Hellenistic times, systematic
excavations are needed. Hellenistic wheel-made
bowls and pots have also been discovered. A
certain amount of Greek finds indicates the general
process from the period of “Greek colonization”,
as well as strong trade relations with Hellenistic
colonies of Magna Graecia. A pendant in the
shape of an ox’s head, with an exceptional artistic
value it incredibly interesting. This apotropaic
symbol, through its stylization, summarizes the
manufacturing processes that started in the Cretan
Mycenaean civilizations, and spread through the
crafts of the Greek poleis, to finally gain its final
shape during the 1st and 2nd century AD, during
the Roman expansion in this region.
It seems that the Early Byzantine fortification
of Stari Ulcinj did not survive the Avar-Slavic attacks,
and that the coins of Constantine Pogonatus imply
a break in the fluctuation of Byzantine coinage in
this region. It does not mean that the Romaioi did
not live on the island for at least a hundred more
years, and that they did not have contacts with
Greek tradesmen, a fact confirmed through the
fragments of globular amphorae of the 8th and 9th

century (Загарчанин, 2013). Such a case along
the eastern coast of the Adriatic can be identified
on multiple sites, from the close Veliki Pijesak,
through the finds of the Tri-conchos in Bar, Mirište
in Petrovac and island Prevlaka of Saint Archangel
Michael, where from the second half of the 7th until
the first half of the 9th century, archaeological data
prove the trade with the Byzantine world, meaning
that the movement of goods was active in spite of
the interruption of the monetary system.
