Public Archaeology and Medieval Archaeology In recent years there has been a movement in Europe that is rapidly consolidating theoretical framework and practice of Public Archaeology (especially governance of archaeological Heritage, communication and identity issues) that, of recognized Anglo-Saxon origin, is declined recovering traditions and experiences of various schools. In Italy this is happening earlier than elsewhere, especially in the medieval archaeology area. The paper elaborates (selectively and critically) on a number of relevant milestones that recently disclosed a specific interest within Italian medieval archeology, addressed to the knowledge of the "public", in its double meaning of 'state' and 'civil society'. It is an interpretation that, based on the results of field research, shares with public and private entities the demand for functional (tools) and economic (profitability) sustainability of archaeological research, in the present era. If the explicit act of introduction of the subject area in the country can be recognized in the 1st Congress of Public Archaeology in Italy (Florence 2012), activity explicitly referred to this approach was already present in the academia (both as advanced training: Padua, Salerno, Florence; and as research experiences: EU development projects as Enpi-Ciudad, for Shawbak - Jordan). A final focus is devoted to communication in archeology, conceived of as an active process of meaning construction and a connective tissue of the different souls of Public Archaeology; comparative case studies from recent British (Medieval Gallery of Museum of London) and Italian experiences (exhibition From Petra to Shawbak) are also discussed.
