Figural decoration on Iberian pre-roman painted pottery is characteristic of a period from late third century BC to the reign of Augustus. Suitable pretext to address two issues that overlap in the Hispanic southeast: the Punic cultural heritage and the romanization as a complex phenomenon of interaction. Current archaeological research confirms that Punic and Carthaginian maintained very close ties with the local population from the fourth century BC. On the Iberian ceramics it is possible to observe that images, originally from the punic culture on terracotta, coins or ostrich eggs, served as models for religious and highly symbolic subjects. Among these, the most notable examples are the images of the main Iberian goddess of Ilici (Elche, Alicante), for which representation are used prophylactic masks on painted ostrich eggs from Ibiza and Villaricos, and forms of Tanit terracottas from Ibiza. Roman influence is much less visible in these paintings. It is best in the vessels typology. However, there is a urn from Ilici of great interest: the so-called vase of ‘the Ballerina’. Is the representation of a sacred character or an officiant as a Potnia Theron, around which revolve the animal attributes of the Iberian goddess: fishs, rabbits and birds. Its most likely dating is the first century BC. The interest of this piece is that combine various traditions. The native in the urn type, pictorial techniques and images of fauna, vegetals and geometrics. The ancient orientalazing legacy in the idea of the Mistress of Animals. The Punic-Carthaginian influence in the prophylactic mask with rounded and red cheeks face. Together with a new Roman use of clothing in the way of the ancient classic Greece, typical of the Roman iconography. But also the image of the Potnia Theron brings us to the italic Republican period, throughout the terracotta temples decoration in Etruria and Lazio of the second and first centuries BC. It is the same mixture of elements observed in the case of sanctuaries and temples, either are using plans and other architectural elements of punic or italic origins. Early conquest of Hispania and its transformation in a roman province in 197 BC conceives a complex world in which heterogeneous forms of differents backgrounds coexist. On the one hand show the intensity of the Punic influence in Iberian culture itself that incorporates certain essential religious icons. And also exhibits some of the methods of Roman integration: incorporating, at least partially, the signs of indigenous identity of the conquered peoples. A way of attracting the native social elite to the new power and administration of Rome. Finally, reveals how the local aristocracy developes iconographic messages that inform the viewers on its support to the conquering power.

The journey through Mediterranean Sea of an excellent sculpture from the Syrian shores will provide to the Iberian society with new religious and sculptural elements. These new elements will be locally developed and widespread in the Iberian workshops along with the external influences during centuries. After their moment of glory, gradually decline until their final with the Romanization of the Iberian society

The interpretation that Fernando José López de Cárdenas made in 1783 of the groups of schematic rock paintings in Peña Escrita and La Batanera (Fuencaliente, Ciudad Real) as hieroglyphics drawn by former peninsular settlers in their places of worship generated a current of opinion seconded by other scholars and researchers during the 19th century. In this work we offer a critical approach to those early interpretations of the Iberian schematic cycle and its impact on the history of research.
